Traveling and photographing sessions in new destinations will forever be one of the things I am more grateful for in this business. It’s still insane to me that I’ve been able to see new countries and states simply by following couples to help document and tell their story.
This trip, to the U.S. Virgin Islands, was a fairly short one of only three days but WOW, it ended up being packed.
What started as a trip for one couples portrait session, became three sessions and a few mini “let me photograph you real quick” stranger minis. Yep.
It’s my favorite thing ever going up to couple I have no idea who they are and asking to snap a few portraits that I can then send to them later.
So, let’s recap.
Day one started by running into a local Maryland family actually and taking the morning ferry over to St John to spend some time beach side. Although this trip was planned for St Thomas, I ended up spending majority of my time on St John. I started with coffee at a little cafe you can find immediately after stepping off the ferry.
A taxi that went by the name of “Brown Sugar” took us to the top of the island so we can make pit stops and work our way down. It was UNREAL. He truly made my first day. He stopped at every overlook so I could snap photos for my print shop and even ran into town once to grab water bottles when no stores were open nearby.
One one of the overlooks I had a chance to snap some photos of this couple who rented a jeep to explore the island.
Day two, I woke up and strolled my resort a little snapping some self portraits and then went off to the Ritz Carlton on St Thomas to meet up with the couple who flew me out to the island to begin with! We laid by the pool and then snapped some photos around the resort before all hopping onto a sunset cruise.
During the cruise it was me and LITERALLY six other couples in love. Talk about a wedding photographers paradise. I pretty much remember making everyone grab photos between eating meat skewers and too many rum drinks haha.
The very last morning I was on the island, I woke up before the sun, rushed to the ferry (barely making it btw) and made my way to St John one last time to photograph Avery & Steve’s Honeymoon Session.
These two found me through a mutual instagram follower and I couldn’t be more grateful for amazing people sending word of mouth referrals my way. ESPECIALLY, when I am on an island thousands of miles from home.
